After the super spell prepared by transformed Rin and Luvia, Dark Saber disappeared for a while and those two already started their usual quarrel. Turns out, the super spell failed to defeat Dark Saber. Dark saber managed to survive and launched a revenge: Excalibur, her noble phantasm. After a big blast, Illya and Miyu could not see Rin, Luvia, Ruby and Sapphire anywhere. They’re on their own, can’t even transform to magical girl mode, and they need to survive against a very strong opponent.

When Dark Saber approaches them trying to finish her job, a miracle happens. Illya transforms into heroic spirit using the Archer card she has. The transformation is not “include” but “install”. She became Archer without Ruby the kaleid stick. Her entire appearance changes. No more flashy magical girl costume. Now it becomes (still flashy) Archer costume.

As we can expect from Archer, the new-and-overpowered Illya also inherits trace-on ability. So she can create any sword at her will. And suddenly the battle becomes a balanced battle. Transformed Illya can stand against Dark Saber on equal term. Close direct combat scenes follow, ended by the usual Excalibur noble phantasm. So typically, Illya creates the perfect replica of Saber’s sword and perform her own Excalibur attack. Illya’s Excalibur is stronger. Dark Saber is defeated and turns into card. Illya fainted and have no memory of what happened. However, Miyu (and Sapphire) saw the entire surprise.

It’s “just” episode 6 and they have raised the bar quite high. I hope the rest of this series won’t turn out “forced”. If they can keep up this climbing up pace and have something bigger for the finale, then I have no complaint at all.
