Now this is a series that caught my attention since the first 15 minutes of watching the first episode. It’s another action-drama type, but the characters are totally different.

First, Mutou Kazuki, the main hero. Unlike most other male hero who started with weak heart, Kazuki is very determined as a warrior since the first episode. He’s strong, he knows what to do, and he doesn’t stop when others tell him to.

Our heroine, Tsumura Tokiko, appears to be a strong-but-heartless female character in early episodes, changes to be a loveable character, but far from being weak. Being a warrior with a unique weapon, four legged knifes attached to her legs that can be controlled as she likes to kill homunculi, monsters that eats humans.

Mutou Mahiro, Kazuki’s younger sister, is different from the usual sister character who can only say “onii-chan” with cute voice. Mahiro’s habits and likes are very similar to Kazuki, or more like the female photocopied version of him. She’s very obedient and will do Kazuki’s order without second thought, and she’s trying to be strong while supporting her brother.

Kazuki’s three best friends (Okura, Rokumasu, Daihama) are typical supporting characters. Studious, girl-chaser, and big body. I always thought one of them will ended up betraying Kazuki, having secret identity or something along the line. But they are not. They are simply playing “good friend” role.

Our story begins with a girl walking alone near an abandoned factory behind the school. A monster tries to attack her, and Kazuki jumps in without thinking. Yes, he is trying to save the girl, but he gets killed instantly instead.

The girl is Tokiko. She is not helpless at all. She was trying to look defenseless to lure the monster out so she call destroy them with some mechanical device created from a hexagon-shaped device called Kakugane.

An ultimate alloy born by gathering
the essence of alchemy : Kakugane.
Activating upon a person’s fighting instincts,
it manifests the user’s potential
into a tangible form.
A unique weapon is created…
that is Arms Alchemy (Busou Renkin) !

Feeling guilt from causing death to an innocent man, Tokiko brings back Kazuki to life by inserting a Kakugane, which has the power of healing, thus supporting his life.

Love the story, love the setting, love the development of Kazuki-Tokiko’s romance story. Recommended for age 17+ (violence scenes, blood, and some weird usage of G-string).

My rating : ★★★★☆
