Spice and Wolf Light Novel 03

Spice and Wolf Light Novel 03

spice-and-wolf-light-novel-cover-03The third book of Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) by Isuna Hasekura in EPUB format.

Why in EPUB format? I prefer EPUB format for my e-books because it’s more comfortable to read in smartphones, e-readers and tablets. EPUB is widely supported by various brands. You can open EPUB books in Nook reader, Kobo reader, Sony Reader, iPhone, iPod, iPad, Android smartphone or Android tablet. It will automatically adjust to whatever screen size you have. Plus giving us the ability to change the font size, to get the best reading experience.

As I explained when I first started this conversion project, I decided to do my own version of Spice and Wolf in EPUB format. The process of converting PDF to EPUB is not as simple as clicking a button. Yes there are all-purpose converters like Calibre. The PDF that I got is actually image files attached together as PDF. When Calibre “converts” the PDF to EPUB, it does not detect the text inside the pages’ image files and treated it like a comic book. The conversion result is not something nice to read in any mobile reader. So, there is only once option left: to do manual converting, hours of work just for one book. But the result is good and worth it.

Lastly, in 2016 I decided to make MOBI format available for Kindle users.

Fair warning : please respect the writer’s work. If you like this light novel and it is available to purchase legally in your country, please buy a legal copy of the book.

Since I was doing manual conversion, I need to check the words and sentences manually. So please let me know if I missed something. Thank you.

  1. Why not using Foxit PhantomPDF (or other OCR app) to convert all the image to text.

Just as you, I search through google but don’t find epub/mobi version of SnW. So I tried convert the image text (on specific page) to editable text using Foxit PhantomPDF and then using calibre to convert it to epub.

Though the result still need to be edit (like some dirt on page was converted as text, doublequotes not well converted, page number, n some minor formating problems), but IMO it should be quicker than type/copy-paste it manually.

note: it takes me about 2 hours to finish it.

btw, thanks for the epub you made.

    1. Thank you for telling me about Foxit PhantomPDF. When I said “manual copy paste”, I didn’t mean I typed the book content one by one. I also have my own way to convert all the images to text. But the job is far from “done”. As you said, there are issues about quotes, page number, and especially about hyphenation. So the “converting” from images to text is done within few seconds, but fixing those “minor formatting problems” takes hours of work. I’m a perfectionist when it comes to books that I like, so I will continue working on this Light Novel until the last episode.

      1. Ow.. I thought you type it manually. hahahaha..

As you’v said, those formatting issues really takes alot times. I just notice that the one I done still have a lot of issues.
So, I’ll be counting on you for the conversion.

        Keep it up man.

btw can I make a request regardings the format?

        1. You can try making your request, but I can’t guarantee I will implement it, ha ha ha. So far 4 books are already finished, I don’t really want to redo them again if it’s going to be a lot of work. So, let me hear about your request first πŸ˜€

          1. Well, I’ll note several things :
            1. IMO curlyquote would look better.
            2. Could you use the original text for each chapter title? well maybe insert the chapter title as an image. (n page break after chapter title would be better)
            3. There are blank paragraph. could you remove it?
            4. I noticed almost all image are somewhat croped.

Hopefuly you’ll be interested to implement it.
Oh yeah, One more please keep the format be as faithfull as possible to original book (except for indent).

well,to tell you the truth, there’r more, but I can’t keep asking can I?
You shouldn’t asking to much as a leecher. hahaha…

        2. 1. my tool to “exract” the text from the image produce that standard quote, yes it can be changed to curlyquote, but I’m too lazy to do that (too many other things to fix)

          2. chapter title as image was considered before, I decided to remove it to somehow keep the file size small

          3. blank paragraph? as in specific locations or in the entire text?

          4. true, I’m still trying to figure out about this image size issue, it seems like, it behaves differently in different reader

          1. for quotes, why not use regex to replace all of it. though you’ll have to used several regex expr for it to be perfect.

there’r blank paragraph in the entire text.
            here, ex:

          2. That blank paragraph is intentional, because it looks better in my reader πŸ˜€ Sorry about that.

For the quote, I’ll do some tests when I have time. Been a bit busy lately.

        1. Oh, I think I replied to the wrong person. Haha. :)I meant “I1111991’s” work in the Snw Vol. 6 that he made. Sorry. πŸ™‚ btw, I’m looking forward to your SnW volume 5. Your epubs are really great. Thank you! πŸ™‚

        2. @jianreyes02 : really? I don’t notice it. btw you might as well wait for balamiere version, coz i won’t fix it.

@balamiere : maybe you should delete my “SNW link” to avoid confusion here.
